There’s something about September that’s filled with promise and fresh energy. Summer is drawing to a close, new terms are beginning, the weather is still balmy and the evenings cool and crisp and mellow. It’s a beautiful time of year. Where I live, in the New Forest, the purple heather is out, the foals are venturing further from their mothers and the landscape is rich with the promise of autumn fruitfulness.
For me, September is the real New Year.
Unlike the gloomy days of January, it’s an uplifting and inspiring time. We’re refreshed after the summer and raring to go. It’s a time for freshly sharpened pencils and notebooks with invitingly clean, blank pages. In September I clear out my workspace, buy a dozen new pens and look forward to working with new and interesting people on books that they – and I – hope will make a difference and will inform, entertain and inspire others.
